Music To My Ears

People in the world tryin’ to make ends meet
You try to ride car, train, bus, or feet
I said you got to work hard, you want to compete
It’s like that, and that’s the way it is
HUH! – Run DMC Vs Jason Nevins

Perhaps I get more inspiration out of a pint or two than I really should do but nothing beats spending a bit of time at the pub, getting lost in a book and if anything comes to mind with that heady mix of literature and alcohol, well all the better.  The music at my local The Bold Forester encouraged me to keep the inspired feeling for this post and was a handy excuse to stay for one more pint as I wrote these notes.

The photo above is a Ste’s eye view of what I saw, complete with blurry vision of those long-range areas, just like my defective eyes!  There is something to be said for the ambiance of a reading place and my atmosphere was solely based on an eclectic and impressive choice or tunes, which only lacked something classical.

I have wanted to do a music post for ages but for some reason not gotten round to it, yet there I was hunkered in a corner, writing down various phrases on my phone – as I forgot my notebook – keeping one eye on my (naturally) precariously low battery and finally the aural magic captured me to compose.  It does make me wonder how many times the subliminal soundtrack that accompanies me as I read has inspired me to the words I use when reviewing books.

What I enjoy most about this particular place is the assorted ensemble of bands piped in to the patrons, that seems to run the gamut of nearly all genres..  There was plenty of 80’s classics,  Fame, White Wedding, Tell it to My Heart, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and of course, Don’t You Want Me.  The YMCA came on as well and I was almost as happy as that construction worker,  check him out in the video, he is having a whale of a time!  I don’t know if that says something for my observational skills or my obsession for cheesy moments in life.

Being the season of course there were plenty of Christmas songs, Band Aid to make us remember the people who suffer, through to the terrorist music of Let it Snow, which will forever be associated with Alan Rickman and the bad guys from Die Hard.  Feeling in the spirit with the songs and having succeeded in now being just two presents shy of my actual target for this year, I lamented my lack of hilariously unfashionable seasonal sweater.

I was then transported to the glorious summer of ’96 bewilderingly by the spice girls when life was good, England had a football team to rival any and that is all you need to remember an era.  Before any other decent reminiscences of that time could come up, there came what was possibly the 80’s film hour with such magnificent tracks such as the Ghostbusters theme and the Eye of the Tiger which just goes to prove that that decade was the best for film music but that is another blog entry in waiting…

The conundrum of posts such as this is the fine line between being inspired to write properly and getting home in time to actually do so on the laptop before enthusiasm or common sense takes over, that challenge of walking home on the cusp of motivation and inventiveness is something I am yet to master the art of.  Still if this post wasn’t absoludicrous enough then please allow me a minute and 22 of your seconds to make it worth, your while getting this far.

    1. That clip never gets old, kids don’t get taught such handy information anymore, I wish some Asian ladies would have told me to ‘be somebody’, my life could have turned you so differently. I shall print this comment out when I am next in and use your name which unless I miss my guess should aid me in my quest for free stuff.

  1. One thing about all this–don’t mourn your unfashionable seasonal sweater–over here for Christmas, people are having “ugly sweater” contests and parties. The more the merrier!

    1. My lack of fashion sense takes me through the whole year which is perhaps not at impressive, ugly sweaters do seem to be almost trendy these days. It is always interesting how things of derision are always brought into the fold eventually and become a fun thing to be involved with.

    1. I had to Google that show, I will ask next time I go in…after I make sure of my free pints of course. Priorities and all that!

  2. That’s so funny.:) The sad part is, life doesn’t give chances like this and Mr T is hilarious. Enjoyed reading this post, and I hope you’ll have a great Christmas. One more thing Ste J, how did you get this snow flake thing on your blog, I like it and don’t have a clue on how to do the same on my site!
    Cheers old friend!

    1. Go onto your settings menu, go to general and scroll down and near the bottom there is a box that needs to be ticked, it says snow next to it, you can’t miss it. I am wishing you a great Christmas and an absoludicrous time, that video was mad I wonder who thought it up.

      1. Thanks my friend, would try it soon. Though I must confess that I’m so lazy nowadays. I guess I’m spent up, both financially and physically. I wish you a great Christmas my dear friend! May the coming year be a prosperous and safer one!
        much love.

  3. Well, I love Christmas music, but I have to comment on Journey. Loved these guys when Steve Perry was still with the group. Many couples have ‘a song’ and Open Arms belongs in that category for my hubby and I. Lovely post, Ste. 🙂

    1. It was even better when I had three pints buzzing around my head haha. I do love songs that have special and unique meaning, for some reason the 80’s songs are just perfect for that. Perhaps we should bring back the 80’s.

    1. I had never come across absoludicrous before but I think we need to get it popular as it no doubt wasn’t the first time. I think I may have to get festive in the American way this year as a gesture of solidarity.

  4. I never laughed so much in a loooonnngg time. I thought this post was hilarious. Your tone, what you were saying and then Mr T, to ‘Top’ it off! Hilarious. Thanks for making my night/morning, as it’s almost 6am and I have not been to sleep yet.

    1. Mr T makes everything alright, whenever faced with a puzzling situation, I always ask what would Mr T do? Life is easier when you follow in the footsteps of T!

  5. So many of those songs bring back crazy memories. I believe I’ve destroyed all the evidence at this point. There are no photos left just in case I intend to run for office some day.

Writing on your phone. You are talented. I can barely type a tex on that tiny keyboard. Maybe you should just sit in the corner and mumble into your phone and have it automatically transcribed? That way, you can maintain a stream of consciousness. 😀

    1. Clever idea, to destroy the evidence just in case you get lots of bloggers pleading for past photos haha. I don’t write the whole post on my phone, I tend to write notes and then write them up properly when I get home, or look at them puzzled and wonder what I was thinking when I wrote them. Mumbling into my phone would be interesting, it would perhaps keep people away from me as I like to be undisturbed when ‘in the zone’.

  6. Oh, man….Mr. T?! lol All of this brings me back, but the thing I loved most about the 80s was my son was born 🙂 And the Ghostbusters theme was a big thing for us. He loved the cartoons and I played the soundtrack repeatedly for him. Luckily, I loved it, too 😀 Love the look of that pub, too. It’s much more modern than I’d pictured whenever you mentioned it, Ste J.

    1. There are older pubs about but I do like it for conveniences sake. I wish the pub played film music all the time and that I could get through work in a handy montage to Eye of the Tiger, just like all the best films had.

  7. You wouldn’t be able to read or write in our local rubbidy, way too noisy. Ten televisions going at once all on different channels and all sports. I do have a favourite café though that’s perfect.

    1. I’m not one for televisions going off, especially if the football is on. Cafés are great as well, unfortunately where I live there is a lack of decent ones so the pubs are the only option but it is nice to get out somewhere at least.

    1. Why thank you, it is indeed a wonderful birthday treat and made me smile.

Perhaps I could suggest a vlog in which you recreate said dance routine, it would go down a storm I am sure. If you do I will send you some crazy shoes. How can you say no?

  8. Haha..oh I wish I had been able to get over here sooner, hardly had any chance to blog or catch up…I love this post, and that video is hilarious. Now I’ve got Don’t Stop Believing running through my head…love Journey, when I write my book that’s all I think of, it being the late 70s and all. Great post and your local sounds great, pour one for me will you? I’ll share a glass of Christmas cheer with you before disappearing after signing off later today…although I’ll try and pop in here and there, if I can, just to check up on you and make sure you are have a wonderful Christmassy time..but I’ll say it now just in case…Happy Christmas Ste and a Happy New Year too 🙂

    1. It is amazing what a few generous glasses can do for inspiration it really is lol. I do like having a soundtrack as I write or read (in public that is), perhaps I can request a glam rock 80’s soundtrack special…the original Transformers cartoon movie absolutely nails that! If I don’t see you before the big day have a great Christmas and New year and here’s to another year of blog magic.
