Christmahoosive Cheer!!!!

Using last years photo as I like to do my bit for recycling.

The snow is back on the blog so it’s time for that most topical of posts the Christmas one (on a side note get your cards off soon speaking of post!)…Being a sentimental type of fella, I am getting quite giddy as I do at this time of year, it’s a traditional thing.

I managed to avoid anything Christmassy until 1st december this year so I am having a proper non materialistic start festivities, that incidentally usually starts in the last week of August for me.

Today I have decided to plug in the head phones, ramp up the volume and write this to the tunes I find myself humming along to every year.

So far I have been listening to my absolute favourites: When a Child is Born, The Fairytale of New York, Stop the Cavalry as well as – bizarrely – Band Aid 20, admittedly the rap bit is growing on me even if it isn’t a patch on the original version.

So brilliant music sorted, my musings are of different sort for Christmas this year, as I find myself thousands of miles away from the vast majority of my friends and family. It will certainly be different but on the positive side, it will allow me to be more appreciative of all those special people who have made not only this year but also the years previous fun, at time outlandish and always acutely memorable.  I honestly believe my sanity was actually kept in check by the exceedingly absurd things we have gotten up to.

So with all those memories swirling at the forefront of my mind, the pleasurable feeling of knowing (and being able to keep in touch with) such wonderful people, more than outweighs the material side of things.  Although I am slightly envious of everyone being able exchanging gifts and hugs and get those final drinks in before the big day that I would no doubt be starting to do right now.  Nothing beats that last pint before heading home knowing that everything is taken care of and all is right with the world for a day or two.

Cycling through the Christmas tracks, I am now on those classic UK anthems by Slade, Wizzard, Wham!, Shakin’ Stevens et al and thinking of all those windows I’d usually peek surreptitiously into as I passed by, usually on my way home in the grey lonely light of the quiet (some would say…silent) night.  I like my melancholy when it feels like that, make no mistake I’d have a good nosy at other people’s decorations, whilst simultaneously hoping for a white Christmas as convention dictates that I should.

Then there are the films! I’m not much one for watching television but christmas films are a must: Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Home Alone 1 and 2, Jingle All the Way and perennial kids favourite The Snowman being top of the bill for me.  Not only those films though, it wouldn’t be the festive season without the other non Christmas films that they always stick in to fill up the schedules: The Wizard of Oz, The Great Escape, Tron, Zulu, Batman Returns, Gremlins, the Disney cartoons Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland and The Sword in the Stone, not forgetting whatever James Bond film they choose to show.  In another tradition those of you who were reading last year will probably be saddened to know that I STILL haven’t received Hungry Hungry Hippos so that tradition continues also.

Anyway enough of my rambling reminiscences, here’s some great music!  This is an obvious pick for a song in the British Isles but may not be as well known around the world, so please enjoy what is to a lot of people the bestest Christmas song ever…

  1. Best. Xmas. Song. Ever.
Love the book tree too! Glad you’re in the spirit- trying to get there myself. Will try out your song list- see if that helps. Can’t do Band Aid 20, I’m afraid. The original is too much a part of my psyche.

    1. The original was the best, not sure what it is about the other one, probably that it was played constantly and just stuck with me. Still all the traditional pop songs are best. If i had a book tree, I would have burned down the house years ago so I stick to pictures.

    1. Yeah, I should have put that in the other list, although for me it doesn’t have the feel to me. I missed out Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as well.

  2. I love this Christmas Song. And did you know that the NYPD does not have a choir? Or they didn’t when this was made. I have heard Ronan Keating and someone else sing it, but it is not a patch on the original.

As films go, for the first time in my 45 year history (as it was last year) I watched It’s A Wonderful Life. Admittedly, I watched the colour version, so this year I will be watching the black & white, seeing as I brought the special edition complete with Jimmy Stewart’s hair follicles. Okay, so not the hair. But it did come with other stuff.

I brought the Now! Christmas album on Friday, and had my sister plug it into her lorry (4×4 Nissan Terrano with bull bars and foot plates) as we went Christmas shopping in the outlet centre near here. I love Christmas music 🙂

    1. I haven’t watched It’s A Wonderful Life but I think this year will probably be the year that I do…I am hearing good things, although it has become a bit of a Christmas tradition to not watch it, so who knows what will happen.

I didn’t know that about the NYPD, I can’t imagine Keating doing anything even remotely good compared to the iconic original lol. I like your choice of ‘weapon’ for parking, I am sure all the jolly music is a lovely soundtrack to the stress and possible expletives of the classic Christmas shop.

      1. Haha yes indeed. I am thankful that I have just about finished mine now.

I put my Christmas music on a couple of days and the Grinch upstairs didn’t like it. No pleasing some people.

        1. I haven’t started yet, although the tree is up and the lights are on it….the rest of the decorations are going on today. Turn that volume up and get that Grinch happy or at least drown out the protests hehe.

      2. I’ve seen It’s a Wonderful Life many times. This Sunday – if things go as planned – I will meet up with some friends to catch it on the BIG screen! 🙂
Def a must see…even if just once.

        1. we have it on the DVR (whatever that is), I look forward to watching it as I have never seen it. I hope your big screening is as awesome as it sounds.

  3. You’d certainly have a job trying to avoid Fairytale if you didn’t like it! One of Mad Martha’s fondest memories of visiting your country was the whole Christmas number one frenzy. And Christmas songs in greneral. She was introduced to Shakin’ Stevens on that trip. His Christmas classic Merry Christmas Everyone, that is, not the man himself. That man truly is a gift that keeps on giving 😉

    1. We do go a bit mad for our Christmas number ones…in fact the other year there was going to be the usual dull non Christmas X-Factor numbr one but there was a back lash and Rage Against the machine’s Killing in the Name got to number one instead…bring back proper Christmas no.1’s or get your radio edit on, is what I say…I’ve always said that though.

  4. You and I are a lot alike, I LOVE the Christmas holidays with a passion and I am usually the type to start listening to my favorite Christmas albums in September. Home Alone and A Christmas Story are a couple of my favorite holiday flicks to pop in and watch.
I hope that you have a Merry Christmas and enjoy the holiday season. 🙂

    1. I sure am, being all happy and giddy (sans hat though). I do love all the traditions and am always up for making new ones as well. September is a bit epic though…especially if it is not under duress, lol. I hope that you have an awesome and merry Christmas season also.

  5. Don’t forget Groundhog Day! Lovely post and I’m glad you’re recycling conscious. I personally find Christmas super stressful thanks to the deluge of relatives I run around like crazy trying to visit on the day. Only truly relax Christmas Day evening, but then I’m a miserable git.

    1. I think it is your miserable git-ness that helped me appreciate you more than I perhaps would have…I gravitate to misery, I feel safer with like minded people…Christmas Day evening is the best part of the day I find…I particularly enjoy the big ‘premiere’ that is a film that has been out for at least a year and does not deserve the title.

I have never seen Groundhog Day and yes I am aware of how shameful that is but then again I feel the shame most days when talking to anyone about films.

  6. One of the ‘inevitables’ when it comes to Christmas TV-movies in my house is Love Actually.. We all grew very fond of it, falling heavily for its charms.. And I don’t even like romantic comedies!

    1. I avoid romantic comedies as well. I haven’t seen Love Actually although maybe one day I will get around to watching it once I get bored of cheesy 80’s films and bad sci fi!
