In The Public Gallery

I thought this would make a nice sister piece to the previous post as that particular one resonated with a lot of people, it seems.  This time I cover the rest of the tenses – possibly quite tenuously – with some present and future musings.  Perhaps you can all start calling me ol’ romantic shoes or something.

My mum once asked me why I analysed everything, to which I replied “doesn’t everyone?”  Dissecting things – metaphorically, I might hastily add –  is all very well and good but it’s not particularly interesting unless you add a dash of dreaming into the mix as well.

If I have one vice(!), its people watching.  I’m regularly gobsmacked by the thought of how anybody can manage to have a life.  It’s easy to imagine ourselves and our friends and such like but the world in general?  There are so many connections, so much action and thought streaming in from everywhere, it’s impossible to conceive of, let alone comprehend it all.  Still at least it’s fodder for my endless analysing fetish.

Personally I am convinced that everyone else is just standing still until I enter into the room and then they act like really people but secretly they are robots and I am the centre of the universe…but I could be mistaken.

Public transport is hardly the sexiest of thoughts that come to mind when musing on your day but there is something – to me, at any rate – about sharing a vehicle with a bunch of other people that I find intoxicating.  Like most other citizens of the world though, I prefer a seat to myself to enjoy the journey properly, then I can really get my money’s worth and let my imagination take me on a second journey, one of whimsy and general oddness.

All those people and their lives on a planes, coaches and trains going around and doing all their stuff are fascinating, without fail there is always someone who looks like they are in the Mafia on ANY journey you venture on.  Go and have a look, it’s true!

There was a Chinese girl on the bus bound for Heathrow once and we got chatting awkwardly whilst waiting for it, as you do at three in the morning, after which we then pottered to different seats when our chariot finally arrived.  I did wonder what she would do over there (in China not her seat across the aisle), who she was and what her front room looked like.  Encouraging my thoughts was that sleepy and silent camaraderie that seems to settle on travellers who are existing together for a small time before they escape the confines of their tin can with wheels and scatter to the far bits of the earth’s circumference.

Life throws up these little day dreams and dramatic flights of fancy, which inspire the nosiness and imagination in me and I suspect I am not alone in that, right guys (and guyettes).  Anyway that is my case for public transport, which I try to avoid as much as possible. As always thank you for reading.

  1. Great post! I love these chance meetings with people and people watching. I remember sitting next to a guy on a train and we ended up chatting all the way till the end of our journey. I advised him what presents to get for his fiancé for Christmas. I still wonder what he actually bought her.

    1. I bet you wished you’d have exchanged email addresses so he could tell you, I had an experience on a plane with a lady who was in two minds about her not very bothered boyfriend and a guy she’d met…needless to say in a seven hour flight I changed the entire course of her life and got a hug out of it…but sadly no contact info to see how it went. Never mind that was my good deed for the decade done.

  2. I hate public transport, most especially planes. But I love spending time in airports. What a great place for people watching and letting your imagination soar. And you’re probably right. We are all robots and you are the center of the universe. 🙂

    1. Imagination soar, I like that pun. I don’t mind being the centre of the universe, someone has to make that sacrifice. I am just so darn self sacrificing and humble about my amazing feat.

  3. I’m in a new city for a few months and I have a great opportunity to people watch a whole new brand of people. I was in a cafe yesterday and found myself being watched by a man while I was watching him. It was fascinating.

    1. it would be awesome if he mentioned watching you in a blog post that you happened to stumble upon. It is interesting seeing another culture of people and how different they are even in the same sort of environment. Town and city centres are a good example with all their identikit shops.

  4. This guyette loves long distance train travel (first class of course) and plane travel (alas, only economy). I love sitting in airports watching people. It’s a great place for scribbling down descriptions of your fictional characters 🙂

    1. I prefer economy on a plane, you meet more interesting people that way. I remember watching the planes go upwhen I was sitting waiting, thinking that I was doing it all on my own and that I was going to be high up…it mad for a nervous wait the first time lol. Next time I am hoping to be more focussed on writing whilst I wait.

I always wander about people I see and whats going on in their lives. I like making things up to. 🙂

    1. I always suspected I was…I am great like that, having everybody revolve around me like that. It is no surprise that soaps are so popular and samey in there storylines, trying to appeal to our nosy nature. x

  6. Actually considering a long trip that may include plane, train, and bus – part of the appeal is what you write. I think that being around the public all day has actually removed my inclination to people watch – created a bit of a bubble – perhaps this trip would reopen that observation (that and ending up in NYC)

    1. Ooh yes go for it…I think the basis for my thoughts was my own trip to America, a nice 30 odd hours of buses, planes, a car and sitting around trying to stay awake. It’s nice to change perspective as well, joining a bunch of travellers (and that Mafia person). I’m excited for your travels already!

  7. You always fascinate me with the way your mind works…the way you look at something with such unique and very varied ways…then express them so eloquently for our minds to journey with you…”with a dash of dreaming”….is magical. I love adventures with you…you’re the bestest travel companion bar none. xxxxx

    1. Then to Portland it is! I genuinely had no idea I had a unique perspective, I suppose it is all the books. You are always welcome on my journey, who knows where we shall end up. xxxxx

      1. Unique and fascinating…that is how I would describe your perspective. For your expression of your perspective I would use the descriptor “Captivating”. ~ Now all we need is a Tardis!! After we go to Portland of course… xxxxx

        1. A TARDIS would make it great to go and do all those mad things and mess with time lol. I’d break the rules, I’m cavalier like that. I’m sure we’d break the universe in a day or two. xxxxx

  8. Watching people can be endlessly fascinating, exciting and on the odd occasion even dangerous. I once boarded a train very early in the morning in southern Europe and was one of the few passengers awake. Despite the slumbering all around something within me sensed something that gave me heart palpitations and it was very uncomfortable to sit there within a body that was on alert while the mind hurried to analyse and catch up with what it was.

Being outside our normal environment exposes us to these innate traits we possess. Your own ‘need to analyse’ is one of the human species survival skills, it’s to protect your tribe, your family, your community, only there are fewer wolves at the door in 21st century England to practice on, so you stretch your analytical muscle elsewhere.

So back to my train journey, I eventually realised there was too much movement in and out of the carriage and I began to notice subtle connections between some of the people entering and some that were sitting. It turned out to be an incredibly adept gang of train robbers that fleeced many of the sleeping passengers without their knowledge, not just removing items, but putting them back after they had taken what they were after. Imagine how crazy you would feel on arriving at your hotel and having lost only the content of your wallet, but not the wallet itself!

What amazed me even more than what I had witnessed was that I sensed it a long time before I understood it. Those little messages that pop into our minds about people, things we think we could not possibly know, often have a grain of knowing in them, thanks to that often dormant but important survival instinct, just waiting to be awakened. Keep observing and train that skill!

    1. Crikey me, that sounds right dramatic, what became of the these nefarious baddies? I will definitely make sure I keep awake whenever I go travelling again. I feel for all those people that had their stuff stolen. Fascinating take on survival skills though, we do get so complacent in these days of comfort and safety…well relative safety if we believe the media.

  9. Hola Ste!
People watching is quite entertaining. I wonder sometimes what people think when they see me. This is a time when I wish I had the superpower of reading people’s minds/thoughts. I like how you say that you are the center of the universe. I know what you mean. I have thought the same thing. I’ve also seen life with me as the main star & everyone else as supporting actors/actresses. When things go bad – I want to take the script & re-write the role.
Happy Friday – Happy Weekend 🙂

I can imagine you with superpowers and a cape, righting wrongs and then writing rights and posting them on your blog. Happy what’s left of the weekend to you too!
