Derision Vision

It’s taken me a bit of time to come to terms with the music event of the year but I am finally recovered enough to speak of watching a re-run of the Eurovision Song Contest.  Every year I prepare to be amazed by this celebration of the avant-garde. Each year it I am blown away by the extraordinarily entertaining mish-mash of utter strangeness which demands to be delighted in.

Deep down we all secretly think that other nations are a bit strange with their different ways and ideas and here is the one time of the year where it is socially acceptable for you to indulge in national clichés and gentle merriment at the expense of our European brethren.  A chance to allow your bewilderment to be satiated for over three hours of faintly terrible but brilliant music and characters.

There is something for everybody, it is a true celebration of lowbrow culture, campness and pure cheese, it is a kitsch spectacular and it is impossible not to love, Take Frances upbeat sounding song about a man who has everything he wants but can’t grow a moustache or the  Russian twins who started singing with their hair entwined…the show gets away with it because it’s just too ludicrous.

The lighting in Copenhagen was fantastic and something to be rightly proud of for those who created it, in some instances the lighting impressed more than the songs in this garish rampage through countries as far-flung as_74769822_74769818 San Marino and Azerbaijan.  Marry this feat of hilarious with some awkward presenters with wooden acting and flat jokes – showing humour is not a universal thing – making it all the more hilarious, yes this year didn’t disappoint at all.  Highlights included:

A man running in a big hamster wheel, a round piano, a member of parliament as a backing singer for the Icelandic entry, Greek rappers on a trampoline and a bearded lady from Austria.  That’s all in one show and that is considered pretty normal…only on Eurovision!

Between songs there was the visual treat of the flag making segments in the form of promotional videos in which the participants get all arty making their flags out of whatever they wish from the classic red London bus to vegetables and Rubik’s Cubes.  This is without going into the voting biases of all the countries who vote for their near neighbours which some see as unfair, which it is if the song isn’t that good like this year’s top three but I suppose with migration and being a global society it is perhaps understandable these days.

Anyway make sure you look out for it next year, it’ll be just as unconventional next time and then some! Here is my favourite tune (all the rest can be found on YouTube), one with a message from Iceland, be warned it is a tad catchy and may encourage you to dress more eccentrically…

    1. It gets addictive, watching the wacky and strange ideas that people think will catapult them to glory and long may it last!

    1. Yes and that rather made me think that people voted for him/her as opposed to the song which I found distinctly average and not gaudy enough.

  1. I haven’t watched it.. Somehow, with all the shining and merriment, last years’ show managed to be boring so this year I was completely out of the story..
    Remember the Rock Hallelujah!? XD

    1. Lordi! That was a great entry and glad they won it, we need more mental acts like that! I’m not sure if I saw last years, I think I missed it first off as I was just back from the US. I eventually caught up though…maybe one year I will go…not to sing, I mean as a fan.

          1. I know what you’re saying – neither am I. Last time I was in a crowd was couple of years ago in Belgrade, at the Ozzy’s concert, and I just wasn’t able to enjoy it all until I got at a considerable distance from the stage (a friend wanted us in a first row!).. All those people moving this way and that all the time and trying to squeeze in in an square inch of space. I couldn’t have believed it. I then said – no more of this for me! Ever! Blissful distance..

I remember going to a rock club to watch a concert which was good but being at the back on a small step allowed me to look around and see all the little details instead of just watching the band…I find I need to try and observe everything rather than focus on just one thing…unless I am in the cinema of course.

              1. I usually cast a glance or two around me, to see if others are enjoying or what the atmosphere is like; but, my focus is on the band. It’s particularly interesting observing their interactions and the ways in which every of the members, individually, treats the instrument or how he relates to the music he makes.

                1. I have never paid that much attention to bands…I will now, I tend to be watching everybody else who is in the moment, as well as planning my blog post for it, it is a bad habit and one that prevents me from being fully immersed in what I do but it does save me writing a rubbishy filler post so there is some good to come of it.

  2. This sounds like it may have been more entertaining that what is called television these days in the states. Almost everything being shown is some sort of reality television or slap-stick comedy. 😦

    1. We have the same rubbish over here, even the documentaries are dumbed down. The proms season is coming on soon, going since 1895 and that is classical music and opera which is always a decent watch. Other than that Doctor Who and the football are the only things I watch…although when bored I do indulge in a show from your way called Ghost Adventures…I must reiterate only when I am highly bored.

      1. I find it difficult to watch television these days. Books and Netflix are our entertainment of choice.

        1. Same here, I very rarely watch any new TV and when it is recommended I tend to find at least half of it over hyped. I am hoping to get some more comic book as well as book reviews up to mix up the mediums and if I get my act together and get some free time perhaps start doing some audio books as well as all the other ideas that I have in draft.

Apart from that I am well, I hope all goes well with you also.

  3. Oh what would we do without Eurovision? You’ve nailed it…again, a brilliant post Ste, thanks for the great memories of this year’s strangest yet. I loved Iceland’s entry so glad you chose that one to play here…great reminder. As for Conchita…well, the song was quite good actually…and do you remember the entry from last year, think it was Azerbaijan, when the woman screeched really high and loud? I still remember the days when Terry Wogan hosted it, loved his biting wit and that’s the only reason we watched it back them. Great read – and here’s to next year 🙂

    1. I was gutted that Iceland didn’t get more points, it was classic Eurovision, loud suits, cheesiness and dancing that screamed The Shadows…brilliant stuff. I wasn’t a fan of Conchita’s song and I am still suspicious that people voted for the personality and not the song. Azerbaijan are always a bit mental, it’s always a relief to see that they get through. Wogan was better than Graham Norton, he was just so understated…Next year I hope it gets even more mental!!!
