In Possible Proximity to Madness

Waiting for a bus on one’s lonesome is usually a fairly boring experience but seeing a bus pull in with the destination Halfway emblazoned on it had me amused for at least the five minutes it took for mine to show up, on time I might add as well.

The natural first thoughts of any sane person is to question the nature of reality when confronted with such a questionable vision, of which challenge I gleefully accepted.  Of course it would be foolish to concede to the obvious explanation that there is in fact a place called Halfway, for its much more interesting to indulge in some exercise of the musing muscle instead, of which I did:

  • If Halfway is a destination then surely it is indeed the whole way and so halfway is a different destination contrary to what is being advertised?
  • Halfway would be a stop en route to the real destination but how do you define where that would be with no clue to the actual distance?
  • Why is the imposter Halfway masquerading as the last stop, wouldn’t a more subtle con trick be to change the name instead?
  • Perhaps Halfway is a staging point, a hub for ultimate destinations somewhere, paradoxically being both a destination and a stopover.
  • But then the question would be what constitutes halfway in terms of the word?  Mirriam-Webster defines it in two ways, one being not total or complete, so to some extent if you will.
  • So that means that the actual Halfway, be it the ‘destination’ or the actual distance on the route to a place cannot be clearly understood without some prior knowledge.
  • Is it perhaps halfway to all places in the same distance radius as it is from where Mansfield is situated from it?
  • If you asked for halfway, would you have to pay the full fare for Halfway?
  • How could they charge you when the above definition means halfway doesn’t have to actually mean halfway
  • Is there a place called Fullway?

I could have gone on all day with such thoughts had my own wheeled demon not fortunately arrived  and I had to do battle with sleep as seems to be the way of late on a bus at mid afternoon but there you go, a little insight into the mind of Ste J and it didn’t cost you a penny.

  1. I won’t get on the bus , if there’s no place called Halfway. It reminds me of halfway houses ( temporary shelters )for parolees and freed inmates who have no place to go home to.

    1. Thinking along those lines, it almost seems like a bus that doesn’t offer return tickets because once there, you are doomed to stay there in a sort of weird limbo. it sounds a bit like how England used to use Australia.

      1. LOL Australia is England’s halfway house. Good one, SteJ.

To a stranger, Halfway is so ambiguous. Like, halfway to where. I guess it’s another major terminal that happens to be equally halfway to everyone’s destination. I feel Twilight Zone coming out of my mind.

  2. Is it possible that we are actually viewing a dreamscape of yours, complete with actors and props, and etc? I think you may have been falling asleep already! LOL.

    1. I often think that the supporting cast to my life only become awake when I enter a room, so really I am in some sort of David Lynch type madness, perhaps falling asleep is to truly wake up!

      1. To use the standard query, are you the emperor dreaming he’s a butterfly, or the butterfly dreaming he’s an emperor? Wow, I had a weird dream last night! It started out in a societal crisis. There was a huge dinosaur-like monster invading the town and tearing it all up, and I had to eat this cake an Italian friend baked for me to keep the monster away. But she and I both took too large a piece of the cake, and had to put some of it back. Then, there was a part of the dream where I was in a car safe from the monster, and zombies were pulling at the door trying to get in. I think it must’ve been the pizza and buffalo chicken wings with bleu cheese that I had last night while watching tv. I’m not normally a disaster-picture fan, so I can’t account for the zombies and giant dinosaur, but I do know I ate too much from the take-out menu last night, anyway!

        1. Take-out has to be gorged on, I think that is a rule, somebody must have written it down somewhere. It is strange how dreams have things in that we don;t normally think about…blame the cheese! If only real life were as surreal as a dream then it would be endlessly inventive and certainly keep you on your toes, especially with the zombies and dinosaurs. I fancy some cake now.

  3. I’m so happy to know there are others in this world…you specifically…whose mind/minds can spin a random moment into 10 (bullet pointed) possibilities. I don’t consider my “mind spinning” to be on a par with yours but I do understand the process 😀 😀 😀

    1. Life is as much about the small oddities as the big stuff. I was on the bus (a different time) and looking out the window I saw a door sized poster of Han Solo encased in carbonite which certainly made me remember to be more observant, who knows what riches passes us by. It’s a good exercise to keep the mind flexible I think, that and it helps make for a blog post when I don’t have time to write a review!

    1. My mind comes across such things all the time, usually I forget to write them down but its nice to share what clogs my thought circuits up of a day hehe.

  4. OH…MY…GOSH! That is so funny. My husband and I were stranded in a ‘no nothing, and I mean nothing, airport. It was packed and the few seats that were there were occupied. We found a spot in the hallway to the terminal and by looking at people/s shoes only, we tried to identify who was wearing them, occupation, and personality traits. We were laughing so hard that even people around us who had no clue what we were doing, were laughing. Sometimes you just have to amuse yourself.

    1. Haha, yes you do, I like your game, I may have to play that sometime, I need to stop travelling alone! Although I am possibly having a short trip somewhere in a few weeks, either to somewhere big like Rome or possibly somewhere really obscure…the principality of Sealand would be a great place to go did I not have to get a notoriously difficult to get visa.

  5. Had you, by any chance, been leaning on a counter muttering the words, I’ll have a half, prior to your dreamscape? 😉 That bus destination is enough to send any sci-fi writer into a state of bliss 🙂

    1. Haha, I hadn’t. Got straight up and decided to head out, any excuse to read in public, flaunting myself lol. Anywhere that doesn’t require me to make my own food is always good.

  6. So, do you continue or do you turn back? Suppose it would depend on which half you prefer!! Hahaha I think there’s a great series of books in this one, you should take up the challenge. 🙂

    1. I was half and half about what to do but decided to keep sane and go somewhere else. It could be a great series of books about people who get half way and never reach their destination, ooo that’s a bit grim, I like it. xxx

  7. Oh this is so funny and reminds me of boarding school. There is a destination called Halfway! We used to ask permission to be able to go to “Halfways” which was the mid point on the avenue that the school was on (it was called Victoria Avenue) and there was a small shop where you could buy basic things. So it wasn’t goiong all the way to the top of the street to the local shops, it was just going to “Halfways”. Thanks for the memory, so funny!

    1. I like memories, it’s like delving into someone else’s photo album, I think we don’t share enough of these memories around enough. The quest is not on the find a stranger place name now.

  8. Bloody council – you pay for a full price ticket and the bastards only take you Halfway! I once saw a bus with “Help! Call Police!” on the front. It was reasonably soon after September 11, 2001 so was mildly disconcerting until I considered that the light displays on the front of buses were still relatively new then, and It was more likely that the driver had hit the wrong new-fangled button than the bus was being hijacked. Particularly since the driver looked supremely unconcerned at the supposed drama unfolding around him.

    1. That is mad, I wonder if anybody actually phoned the police or if the usual public apathy took over and everybody wandered by amused…you have to love Joe public. The popular one over here is for the frequent replacement bus services that go from the train station, there is usually the ‘Choo Choo, I’m A Train display that has me mentally applauding somebody’s wit.

  9. Love this! I think I should take more buses so my thoughts can wander down these kinds of fabulous rabbit holes. You never know where they may lead…perhaps to Halfway? 😀

    1. The only problem with buses is the hygiene of your fellow passengers but then again some of them do must from down the rabbit hole, it’s the only logical conclusion. The mind leads to some crazy places, if buses do that I will be most impressed.

  10. Now of course, you were a stop along the way to Halfway so that means that you exist in Quarterway perhaps. Or are you the starting point??

    Like

    1. If I’m the starting point then surely halfway is relative and in constant flux, I would never reach halfway or even Halfway if that was the case. I would be endlessly searching like some poor punished soul in Greek myth. Not a bad way to be in print I guess!

  11. There’s a pub in London called Halfway to Heaven, which is halfway to the gay nightclub Heaven, though from which starting point I’ve no idea.
My favourite place name is Plumbland. I secretly wished I could live there, just for the address, until I finally passed through one day and found it had little more to it than anywhere else. Maybe I’d burdened it with too much responsibility to live up to the greatness of its name?
Currently I wish to live in Not In Service. As you will be aware, it’s well served by public transport.

    1. Nowhere seems to be called called Starting Point or Beginning oddly, that may have helped, or at least bring up more questions than really needed.

I’ve never heard of Plumbland but Sealand would be an awesome place to live or at least visit, although it is notoriously difficult to get a visa for that place. Names hide many disappointments…

My buses always seem to be going to Not in service especially after all the previous passengers disembark…maybe I look like I need to go there.

  12. Thanks for making me laugh! Too bad you didn’t jump on that bus – it might have taken you to another dimension. But then I guess halfway between two dimensions could be scary.

    1. I don’t want to get stuck in limbo, now that would be boring, even if I had a few books on me like normal. Perhaps one day I will I will embark upon that uncertain journey but if i disappear for years on end you will have to come find me.

  13. For me the only good “Halfway” note on a bus would be if it meant halfway home. I’m not sure if some people realize how exhausting it can be to rely on public transportation as a means to get around, especially for work or grocery shopping. Now you know exactly where my mind wanders off to when I see a bus and a “Halfway” notice for it’s destination.

    1. It is a bind getting around with public transport, I can’t even read on a bus as there is too much going on outside for me. Still sometimes halfway to sanity is the best thing we can hope for on a bus.

  14. Halfway would be a stop en route to the real destination… but how do you define where that would be with no clue to the actual distance…
That´s so interesting… How to define the middle point so as to speak…
Plus, aren’t distances relative at the end… they could be also define by the traveler perceptions, by the way to transport things or people… by the speed…
Overall, there are many variables involved here… It seems certainly hard to say which is the halfway, indeed…
A very clever post, dear Ste… Thanks for sharing… Sending best wishes. Aquileana 🐉☀

    1. It had my head running in circles for a while but was a pleasant distraction whilst waiting for the bus. If we measured the journey in cubits, the question would be which cubit system would we be using, I think I achieved being halfway to madness by the end of my musings.
