Of Nude Mice and Bacon Smells

Before I go into a customary nostalgic post as I am wont to do, let me first amuse you with my first ever entertaining search engine terms that have allowed people to find their way – somewhat strangely – to my blog.  The first one, What type of dog is that? It’s a tortoise I could just about accept but the somewhat more bizarre, proceedings of the second international workshop on nude mice, appeals to my sense of humour but did leave me wondering if that particular seeker of knowledge came away disappointed on not.

Anyway thank you for permitting me that small aside and now to move on with a Christmas post…The genesis of which came last year on a cold Christmas Eve, after returning from a frantic trip to find some elusive brown sugar.  I looked up into the clear black sky and saw the blinking lights of what I reckoned to be the last plane from Minneapolis to Portland, as I looked at it, I knew that I would write this post a year on.

I think it is the whole romanticism of travelling, getting somewhere special to enjoy this most wonderful time of year, which is all the more easier to imagine when one is where they wish to be.  I held those thoughts with me into the new year and the usual distractions life brings.  Yet the thoughts were rekindled by – oddly enough – the smell of bacon as I pottered through town looking for an excuse to have a quick pint.  In hindsight a good excuse would have been to write this post but I am not that clever so I settled for ‘my shoelace looks perilously close to coming undone so I better sit down with a pint and wait for it to loosen itself naturally’.

So, bacon. I always love that smell and I savour it like a rich and lonely man looks at his money but I got to thinking, as I do of the intrepid travellers at this time of year. So focused are they on the need to get somewhere, an almost obsession with beating the obligatory severe weather warnings, all to see loved ones that they don’t savour the finer things in life…like the scent of cooking piggy.  Everywhere is an atmosphere of apprehension but also camaraderie with fellow travellers, everybody holding in the concern of delays and cancellations to share a collective sigh of relief as things go right.

That everybody is absorbed in worry makes the getting home sweeter, perhaps though just for one year, if I have nowhere pressing to be,  I would like to experience it as Hollywood portrays it.  In which everything turns out happily even if that means having to have a turkey sandwich in an airport or allowing the kindness of strangers to either take me in or help me to my destination.

Sentimentalism aside, this post was a whole lot better in my head last year, I should have tried to write it down, but there is always next year.  As for this, I shall be around all of your blogs tomorrow morning as time is against me today but in the meantime I shall wish you an excellent and merry Christmas and that you all make it safely to your destinations.

  1. My search terms are never that funny. I’m jealous. And if I had to be helped to my destination by strangers I would choose John Candy’s travelling polka band from Home Alone.

    1. My search terms are normally standard types of terms but I have been lucky this week but not lucky enough to have had enough to make a whole blog post out of them. I watched a clip of Home Alone last night on a clips show counting down…but in reality up to 25 of the best Christmas films, Home Alone lost out predictably to It’s a Wonderful Life. Have a crackin’ Christmas mate.

  3. It is funny how people end up at our blogs, no? Sangre de Iguana is the top search in my stats?! Anyway, It’s nice not to travel, the cooking piggy here is pozole and adds wood smoke to the scentsory pleasure. Though it will be bouillabaisse for us this year. I do remember so well the anxiety of holiday travel when I was a child though, namely, will we get there before my cousins eat all Grandma’s peanut butter balls 🙂 A very Merry Christmas to you Ste J, peace, Abby

  4. So, Ste J, at what point in having that Christmas pint did you start to experience (hallucinate?) the smell of bacon, and imagine that perhaps your shoelace was untied (I know, you thought the shoelace preceded, but what if….?). And maybe the mice aren’t really nude, maybe those are little brown fur coats, or maybe they’ve simply doffed their Santa gear. Anyway, have a pint for me, and watch a great Christmas film (I just got finished watching “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and I thought of you because you’re always mentioning film nostalgia). Have a great holiday (but if the nude mice start to have untied shoelaces, then you should worry and maybe run)!

    1. The smell of bacon was outside as I was walking perilously close to a pub thinking up an excuse to go in, to be honest it did all get a bit confusing which was another factor in needing a sit down. I don’t think I want to Google the nude mice in case the FBI kick my door in and arrest me, lol, it would probably be life sized nide mice that would break in though, although their shoelaces would trip them up and I could escape…maybe this could be a Christmas film in the making. I shall put my mind to picking a good film this evening and probably give a little huzzah to the fact that I can relax. Have a fantastic Christmas my friend.

  5. Ste J, I loved that video! I never heard that song before and snow is so beautiful when it’s like that, sticking to everything. What I found odd is that the driver ended up at a school, not a house! lol

Also, I’m sure it’s because I’m clueless, but I’m not understanding the search engine thing. Did a person type in “What kind of dog is that?” and found a link to your blog? And how do you find out what someone actually typed in???

    1. I must confess I didn’t watch the whole video, just listened to the words as I typed. It#s fun to add another bit of music to your Christmas soundtrack, it is the cheapest and therefore most magical type of gift to give haha.

If you go to the stats button and look under the referrers and countries, it shows you search engine terms, most are ‘unknown’ as some search engines make the searches private but every so often a gem comes along that makes your day. People typed the sentences into a search engine and I came up as a link they clicked, is my understanding of the whole thing.

Have an excellent Christmas my friend.

I love Driving Home For Christmas, although one of my favourites is Fairy Tale of new York.

I think when we look back on a post we wanted to write but didn’t, we know what we are going to say, but don’t end up doing so because there are words we suddenly forget, and then remember after we publish.

Have a splendid Christmas Ste J

    1. Fairytale has everything, humour, sadness, love it is brilliant. These posts are tricky things, last year with Christina, Penny and the kids we were settling down to watch a film and I was confident of remembering that feeling of looking up and to a certain extent I can but I do often wonder how it would have turned out if I wrote it up there and then. You are right about that remembering things to put in after a post is published, sometimes I think the only way to make me happy with a post would be constant editing of them all for years lol.

Have a wonderful Christmas yourself my friend.

  7. Just another awesome post Steve! A lot of my ‘brain crazy” seems to come from the Canyman who lives in my head!! LOL. YIKES! Scary I know, but that can be what it’s like living in recovery with mental health crazies. LOL. I think I’m pretty “Normal” though, what ever the hell normal is right?

And very Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year my dear friend,

    1. I think normal is overrated, I wonder if people who are ‘normal’ get bored, it is better to be a bit out there my friend. I didn’t enjoy the first Candyman film so much but I did like the second one. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year my friend, I had a cracking time, only spoilt by the need to go into work.

It’s time for a “Makeover”! NO….not me, my blogs! LOL..LOL. I couldn’t afford a makeover on me as it would cost a Fortune!!! LOL. XOXO

        1. I tend to watch movies as well, although this year I plumped from some old 1960’s Doctor Who as it had nothing to do with New Year, that is unless Ice Warriors were planning to invade of course. You sound like you have a busy year ahead and I look forward to sharing your adventures and seeing all your ideas come to fruition.

  8. I love this post, it’s so funny. Although I gave up eating pigs years ago, after watching a video at school, showing them being slaughtered. It was in connection with Animal Farm from my GCSE English class. It was real pigs in the documentary and a real slaughter house. My parents still eat bacon, but having found out the stun doesn’t last long enough for them not to feel it, I gave up eating pork. I don’t eat beef or lamb either, despite predominantly growing up in the countryside next to a farm. On that wonderful thought, I wish you a Merry Christmas and hope you enjoy your special day.

    1. I didn’t know the stunning was not adequate for the pigs, I do try and avoid pork when I can thanks to that episode of House when the patient had a huge Tapeworm in her from undercooked pork. Bacon is irresistible to me though for I am weak like that. I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year my good friend.

      1. Thanks. I wouldn’t have known that either. It was a shock seeing that at 15. Happy New Year to you. I had an awesome Christmas, I got lots more pressies than I could have imagined and all stuff I liked/love. I am already loving 2015. I will be making YouTube my new home in 2015, with many more Embrace Your Quirky videos. I hoped you liked my latest one with Chestnut.

Thanks for saying you are looking to me for inspiration, that’s lovely. I look forward to hearing/seeing more about your YouTubing.

  10. I’m envious. I’ve never had strange or funny search terms and I’ve only ever spent Christmas away from home one time. Everyone comes here, which I actually love so I guess I can’t be envious of that. Ummm…the scent of bacon, I am with you on that one. One of my most favorite scents. That and the smell of fresh coffee in the morning is heavenly and always brings back lovely memories of my childhood. I think the post is great, my friend, but then you are always your harshest critic. I stopped by this morning to wish you peace, joy, love, inspiration, prosperity, and lots of wonderful cheap books for the New Year. 🙂

    1. Hello my friend, I trust you had a great Christmas and New year. I don’t normally get many funny search terms but it was nice to finally get some, though sadly not enough to do a full post on it but I can’t complain. Coffee is a wonderful smell! I love freshly cut grass as well and also reliving past times through those smells, letting them consume me without caring whatever I may be doing at the time. I am working on being less harsh on myself, it takes time but I am softening whilst trying to keep up a good standard. I appreciate all your support my friend.

  11. Mmmmmm….BACON!
I didn’t have to travel far for Christmas. And – the weather was snowless.
Now that the holidays are over & my staycation has ended – the snow & ugly cold weather has arrived. Yes – just in time to drive to work.
I just went to check out the search terms to my blog & they were pretty unexciting. Womp, womp, womp.
