Mind Over Matter

I find I am at my most alone in the company of other people and it is worst when queueing.  I hate standing there, feeling awkward, it’s not worth reading a book and there is little else to do but people watch.  Naturally my thoughts turn inward, which is an interesting concept if you think about it.  Inward would imply outside boundaries yet my thoughts can conjure up anything I wish and are therefore infinite so I have to assume that if the universe is also infinite and I am in the universe but have no boundaries, then logically it follows that my mind must actually be inside out in order for this to be accommodated.  Just a thought but I believe I explains a lot.

  1. That is one heck of a thought; almost as mind boggling as the picture–which I think would be one heck of a flash fiction prompt. Ummm, can I ask one thing though…just how much scrumpy have you had 😀

    1. would you believe, totally sober but my mind needs an outlet when there is queueing to be done. Still if it is conducive to blogging then I am happy.

    1. I didn’t know that, I do try and mentally bore a whole in the back of the person in fronts head sometimes but so far nothing of interest has happened.

    1. The things I do for my bloggers! Being British, I tend to queue more often that not so you may be in luck again soon. These words came to me whilst totally sober as well, which leads me to wonder if an experiment should be conducted.

  2. I am REALLY trying to wrap my head around this, and I “think” it’s because I’m so tired and just wrote a long, “deep” reply on another blog just now, that I’m having trouble grasping the whole “infinite” thing. I KNOW it’s me lol Or maybe it’s just because, when I’m in queue, I end up striking up conversation with someone or more than one someone so it’s harder to comprehend! lol

    1. Talking to people in a queue, that is unheard of here, there is a lot of shuffling, sighing and checking of mobiles but chatting is anathema. The idea of infinite has sent some mathematicians mad…it is a concept that is easy to accept yet hard to analyse.

      1. Agreed, but for me it is more to do with our Creator (yes, I steadfastly believe in Him, to the chagrin of much of the modern world)—the “infinite” at both ends of His existence, having no beginning or end. Because it’s beyond comprehension, I actually get extremely uncomfortable and immediately put it from my mind lol

And really? No talking to anyone sharing that same “queue” space? Hmmm…

        1. I believe getting uncomfortable is the ‘correct’ response, if that is the right word. To find something inconceivable like God is a frightening prospect but if you could conceive of He then he would not be perfect as he is. We are not so therefore cannot realise Him.

We Brits don’t talk to each other much, we shuffle and keep to ourselves and inwardly become annoyed lol. Yay for social stereotypes.

          1. I’m thinking the “not talking in queue” mentality may also feed into the “what are you thinking?”/”Nothing.” response? But I think that was another post lol! I can’t remember now! I think when someone replies “Nothing” it’s either because they can’t/don’t want to voice what they’re thinking or the thoughts are random, unconnected and meaningless and not worth voicing or are pushed out as soon as someone speaks.

            1. When somebody asks me something I tend to make something random up when my thoughts aren’t that interesting, I like to do that to things entertaining for everybody. I like to keep people smiling.

  3. Ste!…

You say: “Inward would imply outside boundaries yet my thoughts can conjure up anything I wish and are therefore infinite so I have to assume that if the universe is also infinite and I am in the universe but have no boundaries, then logically it follows that my mind must actually be inside out in order for this to be accommodated”.

I would say you are quite shy, but you could also be self centered (selfish, narcissistic maybe?)…
As to your thoughts and they accommodation, that is pure entropy!.

Have a great weekend!, best wishes, Aquileana 😀

    1. I am quite shy but that doesn’t last once I find my feet in whatever new thing I have planted myself. I wouldn’t say I am self centred, selfish or narcissistic but then again I would say that, haha.

  4. I watch people too in a queue, or just imagine who they are, what they do, or simply write a book about them in my head for the duration of the queue… Interesting post old friend!

    1. The things that go on in our heads, it may be an interesting game to speculate on what others are thinking when queueing, perhaps that is how we will be able to spot felow bloggers in the future.

  5. I wish I could talk to you about your thoughts at such times…where are you when I’m standing in a queue? Who else has such thoughts I wonder? Perhaps the entire universe is inside out…should we be scared? I love the way you ponder such things, and love the pic too. I want to go there…

    1. I was in a shop, nowhere of dramatic import or anything but it does annoy me at such points that I can’t mentally tune into other people’s heads. If the universe was inside out then would we know, it would be the right way around for our perceptions, it is one of those questions that needs quite a lot of time, thought and possibly some bottles with potent contents for us to arrive at some proper (mad!) answers.

  6. I love the juxtaposition of that one. My mind goes like that quite a bit. For example – Nothing is something – So nothing does not exist. That’s why it’s called nothing. Not – exist – ing.

    1. Exactly! When I ask people what they are thinking of and they say nothing, I just shake my head at that lol. Does the absence of something makie it a nothing or does it mean it is a space, which is something. Perhaps there isn’t a nothing, except for the contents of my wallet when it is my turn for a round.

      1. Hi Ste, I don’t know how anyone can think of nothing. All bodily functions are linked to the brain, surely if we thought of nothing, we wouldn’t exist! I love that bit about the round.

  7. You sure have an interesting thought process there Steve; which makes my mind flip to the only logical conclusion, that your mind is that of a writer. We tend to analyze on random thoughts quite a bit, don’t we?

    1. Random thoughts are so much more fun than usual thoughts about groceries and what type of hat to wear. I think I am getting more into this writing malarkey recently than ever before, thank you as always for your encouragement.

      1. I agree the typical thoughts are boring, but the random thoughts; like those of a writer are always priceless.
I’m thrilled that I can encourage the writer inside you. 🙂

  8. Very interesting observation. I like the idea of our minds being inside out. I’ve always been fascinated with the inner workings of our minds. Now, though, I may have to change that to the outer workings of our minds.

    1. Strange things occur to me when I am forced to stand in line, it does beg the question what else could be inside out, if mirrors were inside out would we see a true reflection for instance?
