Doorning Thoughts…

Ninja cat!
Ninja cat!

The picture is not relevant to the post (unless you wish to find an obscure reason) but does act as a distraction for I wish to get thinking of something else and a picture of that would have an effect on your imagining process. Not a lot of effort is required as I have already done the hard work for you on that score but it is a Sunday and you should be resting anyway.

Those of you with active imaginations will already have at least one world somewhere inside your head that you are or plan to write about  For some of you, you have the blank starting canvas ready to imprinted with and cluttered up with many exciting and unique things.

I would like to suggest to you a door, it leads nowhere at the moment, the purpose of it is irrelevant and you can choose where it goes later, it is the door itself that is going to be the actual focus.

At first glance it’s a solid-looking regular door sized door, it has the weighty look of stubborn resistance.  It is made out of dark wood, with a varnished finish and has a liberal sprinkling of cobwebs as well as a bounteous supply of dust.  Most likely this entrance (or exit) has not been used for innumerable years and gives off the impression that it will most likely squeak like a cliché when opened.

On closer inspection, after wiping away a few layers of dust, there is revealed a metal shape, similar to a severely angled fleur-de-lys.  There is a lattice effect scored into the symbol which is raised almost imperceptibly from the door’s surface.  It gives off the impression that it was beaten into the very fabric of the wood.

The cobwebs seem to mirror the symbol on the door like it is somehow influencing the things around it.  there is a compact hunk of rounded metal in the usual place which serves as a handle, should you wish to try it but no keyhole to keep people out…or in.  Although the door fits snugly into the wall, it is wearing away at the bottom, with some jagged edges, a slow and inexorable rotting process is gradually taking place.  There is nothing to see through the gap, just a darkness that makes pitch black seem shiny.

The wood feels rough to the touch despite its smooth finish, it retains a natural harshness like it yearns to be tree bark again.  This door is strange, it is subtle, it blends in to the landscape and is easily overlooked, like it wishes to avoid attention and wishes to dwell only in the corner of your eye…its presence radiates a palpable sense of sentience.

I hope this gateway to new worlds (or dusty rooms) can find a place in your worlds or create new ones, I am curious to know what you would make of such a door, where you would place it in your creations and where it would take you…

  1. Intriguing as the image of the door is, I would probably remove it entirely and stack it against the far wall of a room, since I find the actual archway between worlds to be of more significance, so that when you are in one world, you can see the next clearly (or obscurely) glimmering ahead of you, only to have it change somehow as you actually take the initiative and step through the portal….p.s. pet the lovely kitty-cat for me. Tell him or her that cats are my favorite familiars to follow through portals, as when you follow them, they always hurry a little faster in intimation that they have more important things to do than lead around an incompetent human being.

    1. That is a great answer, I like that the best so far! Archways are great, always so dramatic.. I petted Bela and she looked wide eyed because a wood pigeon sounded like it was going mental outside. We humans are a bit dim compared to animals…I bet they secretly laugh at us…but only when they have been fed.

  2. What a great thought starter, Ste J. And, at this desperate moment in my first draft, god knows I need a door, a battering ram, and a parachute. So I hope you don’t mind if I kick your lovely door open, leap through the opening and drift down on a cloud of inspiration into the unknown below. At least, I hope that’s what will happen.

Bela’s great. And, yes, they do laugh at us. We are, after all, really their pets.

  3. It sounds like a door I’d find in a Haruki Murakami novel, the entrance to another reality almost the same as the one we have left but with a few strange differences like two moons instead of one. The door is the boundary between reality and magic realism but not fantasy, not everyone even realises the realtiy has changed, the differences are so subtle.

    1. Ooo, I like that…it is fun to be in the abstract. It would be interesting to go through such a door and then to notice the differences but not remember which door was the one that leads back to our world.

  4. I love your Ninja cat! I would probably hear sounds coming from behind the door but I wouldn’t be able to open it and would try to push something flat underneath it to see if I could feel something. In doing so, I would feel something touch my hand and the story would go from there. Of course, it might be a cat’s paw the other side…but I’m not telling 😉 Love your description 🙂

    1. Ooo, I like that, you start a story and then leave it just as it’s all starting to kick off. Perhaps I will read a post on your site about this story one day….

      1. Well maybe, although I freeze when I think of fiction for some strange reason. Flash fiction is my limit at the moment but you never know… now I feel that you’ve set me a challenge and I do enjoy a challenge 😉

        1. There is never any pressure from me, as I am right nice but if ever you are a loose end or devoid of ideas for a post, then perhaps this will come back to haunt you, so to speak.

  5. My mind is going every which way with ideas. Even the little nuances like the cobwebs mirroring the symbol on the door. Ohhh, so many choices, Ste J, so many choices! 😀

Thank you for bringing me elsewhere today. I needed it!

      1. And so you took me somewhere unexpected:

        Amaranthine

He spoke of a time that escaped my grasp
        A smokey-toned voice with a slight rasp
He was persuasive in a passive way
I was inebriated from lust and Chardonnay
Then, through my mind’s flight, I walked the path to his home
Methodically he plotted through my roam
I felt him caress my skin as I was near
The thumping of his heart was loud in my ear
The scent of fresh flowers was in the air
I fashioned a wreath to wear in my hair
His voice brought me to the dark wooden door
Embellished with what appeared to be the famous Fleur
Centuries old and probably had passed
Since the arrival of the visitor last
Cobwebs abound as I opened the crypt
I found my amour through the time that slipped
When he kissed my lips, it was pleasure and pain
Just a puppet in his world, forever I’ll remain

        1. This is great, a lovely twist at the end, a little racy and great to see my door get an airing, if doors can get an airing, rather than to help air out…The thought of time is intoxicating and you nail that thought perfectly. The idea of a puppet conjured up way to many connotations for this time of the day.

          1. I revised it a bit, just the line about his heart beat because he’s dead, after all, or rather, an immortal. I shall post it on my blog with a link to your post.
Ah, the wants of us humans…a puppet to do as we wish.
