Thanksgiven

I wrote this on Thanksgiving Thursday but was to lazy/full to post back then:

It’d be more than slightly remiss of me to not include a post this year about Thanksgiving, now that I have experienced my first one.  Having eschewed American TV, except for the odd cartoon and Doctor Who, I have avoided all the Thanksgiving and Christmas build up, so when led to believe that Wednesday would be a manic shopping day I braced myself for many trolley cart impacts and possible gouging and fighting over the last packet of stuffing.

That didn’t happen, in fact it was a fairly low-key bit of shopping which admittedly disappointed me, for I was looking forward to doing some rugby tackling of old ladies in order to get the last bits of food on offer and other such dramatic things that would amuse you all.  Alas I have to leave you dissatisfied on that front, at least until the big Christmas shop.

Well the big day arrived and there was much to do, I had a shower so I would resemble some sort of a human being and then proceeded to get in Christina’s way as she prepared food in an orderly and impressively unruffled manner.  After a short break for a coffee run – where we had just missed a car exploding – it was back for more in the way-ness and some excessive gravy stirring.

As well as being a bystander kitchen wise I was also treated to the Macy’s Day parade coverage, well really I was treated to loads of adverts with a bit of the parade in between and it was great! Typically American as it was, with lots of smiling people and high kicks and a woman who was clearly miming.  All the things I most fervently associate with America were confirmed in those few hours.

It was the meal though that was the highlight…and then some.  sitting down with Penny, Christina and the kids, we had a veritable feast of smoked turkey, mashed potato and sweet potato mallow, stuffing, gravy, home-made potato rolls, green bean casserole, a more epic than just usual fruit salad fruit salad and of course, pumpkin pie.  It was a great meal with great company and my compliments go to the culinary queen for making such a meal so pleasing in all ways.

If you are wondering where the photos of said meal are…well we all tucked in and ate a good chunk before I thought of it before clearing the rest into containers for tomorrow, take my word for it though it, the dinner table was a picture.  Now as I sit here all content and thankful for such awesome friends and family, in the US, in the UK and in all the other countries where my blogger friends reside, I realise that there are still mountains of left overs for tomorrow and that is just fine by me…just fine.
