Thanksgiven

I wrote this on Thanksgiving Thursday but was to lazy/full to post back then:

It’d be more than slightly remiss of me to not include a post this year about Thanksgiving, now that I have experienced my first one.  Having eschewed American TV, except for the odd cartoon and Doctor Who, I have avoided all the Thanksgiving and Christmas build up, so when led to believe that Wednesday would be a manic shopping day I braced myself for many trolley cart impacts and possible gouging and fighting over the last packet of stuffing.

That didn’t happen, in fact it was a fairly low-key bit of shopping which admittedly disappointed me, for I was looking forward to doing some rugby tackling of old ladies in order to get the last bits of food on offer and other such dramatic things that would amuse you all.  Alas I have to leave you dissatisfied on that front, at least until the big Christmas shop.

Well the big day arrived and there was much to do, I had a shower so I would resemble some sort of a human being and then proceeded to get in Christina’s way as she prepared food in an orderly and impressively unruffled manner.  After a short break for a coffee run – where we had just missed a car exploding – it was back for more in the way-ness and some excessive gravy stirring.

As well as being a bystander kitchen wise I was also treated to the Macy’s Day parade coverage, well really I was treated to loads of adverts with a bit of the parade in between and it was great! Typically American as it was, with lots of smiling people and high kicks and a woman who was clearly miming.  All the things I most fervently associate with America were confirmed in those few hours.

It was the meal though that was the highlight…and then some.  sitting down with Penny, Christina and the kids, we had a veritable feast of smoked turkey, mashed potato and sweet potato mallow, stuffing, gravy, home-made potato rolls, green bean casserole, a more epic than just usual fruit salad fruit salad and of course, pumpkin pie.  It was a great meal with great company and my compliments go to the culinary queen for making such a meal so pleasing in all ways.

If you are wondering where the photos of said meal are…well we all tucked in and ate a good chunk before I thought of it before clearing the rest into containers for tomorrow, take my word for it though it, the dinner table was a picture.  Now as I sit here all content and thankful for such awesome friends and family, in the US, in the UK and in all the other countries where my blogger friends reside, I realise that there are still mountains of left overs for tomorrow and that is just fine by me…just fine.

      1. It’s bloody awful over here. ASDA (part of Wal-Nut) have taken it upon themselves to do the same thing. I think they will not be doing THAT again. I brought Kester an XBOX 360 game the other day, the special edition – £60 ($95) and the store has a Black Friday say where it is £35 ($52) Hurumph! lol

  1. What is “sweet potato mallow”? Is it made from sweet potato or is the sweet an adjective describing regular potato? And how does the mallow fit into the picture?
On another fairly unrelated note, and speaking of Great American Traditions, I heard on the radio today an ad urging people to get in early to order their Christmas Turduckens. In case you are unaware, a Turducken is an American delicacy (and I use the term loosely), perhaps peculiar only to Texas, I’m not entirely certain, comprising of a turkey, stuffed with a duck, stuffed with chicken. Hardcore Turducken eaters can even go so far as to stuff the chicken with bacon, creating a Turbaconducken. On hearing the advertisement, all I could think was that this was one custom that really didn’t need to emigrate. I don’t think sleepy little Brisbane is ready for the Turducken.

    1. Turducken sounds to me like a travesty, it’s meat carnage of the highest order and I shall not be participating in that (unless it’s free!). If it hails from Texas, then it surprises me not…sweet potato mallow is sweet potato mashed up with marshmallows on top, then cooked so the mallows stick together…and serve. Very sweet but off it offsets the other flavours nicely.

  2. Yeah, stay away from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade stuff, and you’ll be all right in America. Happy Thanksgiving.

        1. That would make for an interesting list…it could take a while in the compiling but that’s only because I would have a whole piece about the passport control farce…but don’t get me started on that.

  3. Glad to hear you had such a wonderful first Thanksgiving in the US. Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite to cook as well, but much better to consume. 🙂

    1. I did my best to help but wasn’t successful on that point…I got the feeling Christina found it preferable if I took several steps back lol. It was great and I am looking forward to Christmas now…and my stomach agrees.

        1. I think I came across as the classic Hugh Grant style bumbling Englishman…next time I will head into the kitchen only to get a beer and be that other kind of cliché lol.

          1. So there is another reason you are so special! I adore Hugh Grant, but need I say, no ladies of the night for you, ok lol?!

            1. I think the only ladies of the night I will be partaking of will be characters in books…not that sort of book, I hasten to add I just meant characters of a female persuasion…oh dear that explanation didn’t work out very well but you know what I mean!

  4. Minus the turkey (I have a slightly traumatizing story about that) – Thanksgiving dinner is my all-time favorite meal of the year. It is full of family fun & lots o’ good eats!
Glad you enjoyed your first ever Thanksgiving meal in the good ol’ US of A. ANd – I’m sure being with Penny, Christina, & the kids made it all that much better! 🙂

    1. It certainly did, it wa the icing on the cake…we didn’t have real cake though. There was no room for that after the portions I ingested like a ravenous beast. I love a good story, especially turkey ones…in fact they are my favourite by strange coincidence, hint, hint.

  5. I haven’t tried sweet potato mallow yet but this year I tried sweet potato pie for the first time. Delicious! Can’t decide if I like it better than pumpkin pie… hmmm, no, I think pumpkin pie still wins! Glad you had a wonderful first Thanksgiving 🙂

  6. I got such a laugh from your bemusing over the possibility of having to rugby tackle old ladies in case the last bits of grocery items were in jeopardy of being sold out. Here now, Ste J, you’d a better chance of seeing that on Black Friday for certain doorbuster electronics at Walmart in bigger cities. Hahahahaha Thankful for the gift of laughter right now.

    1. I watched the news, with all the animals going for a bargains lol. I couldn’t get involved in that sort of scrum. we all stayed in here, it was saner. I wouldn’t hesitate to tackle an old lady if the situation called for it though.
