Mates on a Plane

It’s amazing who you meet whilst trapped in a fast moving test tube with wings, thousands of feet up.  Perhaps there is a bond there knowing that at any second fatality could happen and there is not a lot we can do about it, except fervently try to recall the background noise that was the safety video. Or perhaps I am just a tad paranoid still, it’s not natural to fly really is it?

The sort of view I chose to enjoy when we took off.
The sort of view I chose to enjoy when we took off.

But now being a hardened veteran of six flights I am able to enjoy my recollections, of course the first person to suffer me on a plane was Denby on last years trip to Amsterdam and unfortunately for him, but much to the amusement of Rick and Tom I ended up nervously babbling the whole flight and being in all probability slightly annoying.

Well now I am a changed man I can now look right down at the ground and not flinch, although I refuse to look out of the window as we go up.  Digressions aside, I met some rather nice people on my journeys, first off was Lee, the Managing Director of a textiles exporting business.  Naturally we sat next to each other in near silence for about 8 hours, until we were about half an hour from landing and then we struck up a conversation. I learned handy tips about customs and such like and need to Stemail him about my trip as he showed an interest in my solo jaunt to the opposite side of the world.  I think he thought it was great that I was doing such an odyssey but that I was also slightly mad.

On my next plane to Portland I met Sandy of Iowa fame, whose Email address I have sadly not yet been able to find since I came back, she was the first American I really spoke too and she was extremely nice and chatty and we spoke at length about why we were going to Portland and then did a lot of staring out of the window.

That was ruined as my ears popped on a swift descent and I fear I ended up just shouting at her, although I tried to modulate my voice probably adding to mu strangeness. Then of course came the awkward moment when I said goodbye three times as it took ages to get off the plane, awkward but probably not as awkward as Sandy having to sit next to a guy who had been travelling for over a day and had no deodorant, thanks to customs.

It was the way back that things reached there apex of fascinatingness and that shall be told when I next post.  Suffice to say it was most unexpected yet almost made me feel human again after leaving that golden state known by the initals WA.

  1. One does wonder why an MD wasn’t in upper class or business class. Unless of course it is like when I was Managing Director of a company. I was the only person who worked for it. So I was MD, CEO, President, Accountant, and staff. I left that though when I had an argument with Human Resources.

Glad that flying is becoming old hat for you

    1. Haha, that made me laugh a bit to much. If I was going on holiday for three months and spending my own money, I’d go cheap as possible to keep costs down. He did have Agricola and the Germania which was awesome though. Flying is now something I can do sitting down, I hate having to do it like the Flintstones, stupid Easy jet

  2. I am not a big fan of flying either; it’s something I try to avoid unless it’s necessary.
However it’s always good to have a friendly person to talk to.

  3. I am not surprised you made friends so easily on your flight…I attribute it to your charm, charisma, and easy going nature…just think…another few flights in the future perhaps (hint hint) will have you with even more friends…not to mention more adventures to write about! xxxx

        1. Oof, yes please, now I will really come back. I want to talk backwards when we get there for I bet that will be really original. It all sounds like a heady mix of veritable pleasures which I can’t really say no too. That and you still have my Calvino book of course…tea leaf!

          1. I *knew* that would get you lol!! Talking backwards…naaa let’s just use all that Latin we’ll have learned! 😉

I find that your response of a certain return has me more than exceedingly happy! I shall hold Calvino hostage until you claim said book….I assure you…lest you worry… that I shall keep it in proper mint condition…even if I happen to get to read it before you hehe! xxxx

            1. Yes, that would be awesome as I seem to have read a disproportionate amount of the books you own so that would help redress the balance. That’s the sort of hostage situation I can get with! I remember precisely the shelf it was on as well for when I do my S.W.A.T impression. Not that they will let me bring tear gas into the country.

Latin, yeah we came up with a fair bit of that, I shall read my Latin dictionary as well to keep acusp of that dead language.

  4. Very entertaining, Steve! I haven’t experienced flying on my own in a different country, but hey, at least you went to an English speaking one. Imagine the horror to go to a place where people can’t understand you.

I am also surprised to learn that you are not a “master” of flying yet. Still, I know for a fact that it will only take a few flights more (probably going here to the Philippines) until you finally adapt in the experience of riding a test tube with wings. See you here soon!

    1. Haha, once again I am stunned by your oh so subtle way of hinting for me to come and join you in your many islanded country. Having seen all your photos recently, looks like you guys have a lot of fun.

I do wonder how lost I would get in a ‘proper’ foreign country, knowing my look I’d end up in jail by accident but what is life without risk hehe.

    1. If I didn’t have to travel for bloggers AND sunnier climes the happier I would be, however I think I can enjoy the journey be that the landing always brings fun and frolics.
