Summer of 69 (or Less Good Reasons Why This Season Has Been Great)

I’m not normally one for sentimentality, unless it’s an old Amiga 600 game or some such retro item, but this summer I think has been especially good for the English/British in terms of events to take part in. In fact I would go so far as to say we have been spoilt for things to celebrate, no matter what your interests.

Of course, many, many other nations have also been enjoying the festivities, in what has been ‘a bit of a mad summer’, It’s just I feel particularly proud of my own country. And for us English, that isn’t something that comes naturally for us at all.

Digressing slightly, I just looked up what people in other countries think of the British, it’s a fairly accurate list in fact to sum it up here are some of the things people were right about: we all drink tea and live in castles, we all know Kate Middleton and we love to queue up. But to get back to the point, we are really a stoic bunch, who don’t really see the positives when it comes to the state of the nation, so we just get on with it.

When you think of what June to August has provided tough: almost a Wimbledon champion, a decent European championships (especially the first 20 minutes against Italy), a Jubilee, the (as always) magnificent Proms. Then there was the weather, which has been fantastic in August as well, it’s like an actual summer or something after the now oblitigary floods.

Add to that, an Olympics where we came third, (after winning lots of the sitting down events again) and a Paralympics in which we are, at the time of writing, third, not bad for an event we pioneered in the old Greek spirit. Both truly amazing feats for such a small country. Not only that but we actually managed to avoid riots this summer and organise something that didn’t fail miserably. Including a couple of really enjoyable opening ceremonies. If only the country was run on such lines as this we may get enthusiastic about it.

And if I may extend summer back to the end of May then we can even celebrate not coming last in Eurovision which is always a bonus. But then if we would have had Englebert in a tin foil suit, being chased by men in giant cheese costumes whilst a brass band pretended to suffer from consumption all mixed in with a samba beat we probably would have won it for us. Because that is the sort of stuff the rest of Europe likes.

So now with the end of summer, it is time to batten down the hatches, start unboxing the christmas stock at work, and wait for the first good dose of seasonal affective disorder and the inevitable disappointment of many a football club failing to live up to pre-season expectations..  Proud to be English? You betcha!

  1. four things I love about England (in no particular order): clotted cream, english humour, the tate modern museum, english people.

I lived in London for 4 years and it was a wonderful time in my life; I liked this post a lot!

    1. Glad you liked the foibles and other oddities of the English race. If/when you come back over, I shall most certainly give you a wave in my new patriotic top hat!

  2. Well I went from reading an excellent review about an amazing relevent subject of inner city drugs and all that accompanies it to the previous post which is a completely different sort of thing. (btw I always feel like I’m sneaking into your house at night when I come here and know you’re sleeping, I know weird thought), soooo, back to the subject. I think you’re a romantic. Yes I do, I’m sure you’ll come back right away (after you wake up) with some clever witticism. But I could hear what you were thinking vast these many miles (nice turn of phrase don’t you think?) This is a wonderful post, you’re doing your stuff here and I like it, I also liked the post that follows but for different reasons, obviously! Well that’s all I’ll leave quietly, tiptoeing out the door on my way out! 🙂

    1. Sneaking into my house at night, I enjoyed that, it conjures up a good type of sinister. It also explains why I keep getting the thought ‘Penny is great’, I can only assume you have been whispering that phrase into my ear as I sleep. No witticisms on the romantic stuff though, I can be but I have to be in the mood for it, otherwise I am just Mr Realism and that can wear me down. Not to big myself up or anything but the best example of it I have come up with was this post: https://bookmust.wordpress.com/?s=departure+to+melancholy which I think is my favourite ever post, not sure if you have read this one or not, although as you are very prolific I think you may have. If you can hear me that far away I must have booming thoughts, i like that though, can you hear what I’m sending you now?

  3. Yes that may have been me whispering, do yo have many that visit at night? Well that’s okay as long as they all whisper “Penny is great” lol. Of course I just went and read that post, I had not read it before. A pleasurable melancholy fits perfectly, I know the feeling well. How I wish you would take it upon yourself to do some more writing like this. You are very very good. And yes I can hear them! 🙂 Penny

    1. You are definitely the most stealthy of my visitors, oddly I have been ending a lot of sentences this week with ‘better than a stick’, so there must be some odd nighttime dwellers out there doing bad things to my thought processes. I would love to write more descriptive and different posts, I do think my writing lacks when i don’t get into the mood for it, but then again I am of course my biggest critic and these days I know ‘I can’!

  4. Oh Ste, I’m so glad you gave me the link to this fabulous post…I absolutely love it! You’ve had me laughing out loud (LOVE the idea of Englebert in a tin foil suit…but don’t think even that would have saved him from such a dismal song…) and reminiscing about our glorious summer of 2012 and all that we achieved. Amazing, as you say, for our little island. The Olympics and Paralympics were truly incredible that year. As for the Jubilee, nobody does these kind of celebrations better than us do they? Proud to be British, too right! We will carry on despite what came to light about certain ‘iconic’ celebrities afterwards…

    1. Yes despite Operation Yewtree, we do have a great record of events and there is always the charity events the Beeb covers, it amuses me that we are such a separate people in public until an event comes around and then we feel part of something for a while…here’s hoping that we get the next World Cup from Russia!
