Love in the Time of Cholera – Gabriel García Márquez

‘Fifty-one years, nine months and four days have passed since Fermina Daza rebuffed hopeless romantic Florentino Arizo’s impassioned advances and married Dr. Juvenal Urbino instead. During that half century, Florentino has fallen into the arms of many delighted women, but has loved none but Fermina. Having sworn
his eternal love to her, he lives for the day when he can court her again.

When Fermina’s husband is killed trying to retrieve his pet parrot from a mango tree, Florentino seizes his chance to declare his enduring love. But can young love find new life in the twilight of their lives?’

So reads the back cover and whilst it gives you the plot of the book, it in no way prepares you for the sheer joy of the actual reading experience. This is a book for language lovers, the rhythmic prose has a poetic quality and I found myself on many occasions rereading the same lines just for the sheer joy of hearing them again.

What you are getting for your hard earned currency is a beautifully written love story, a celebration of love in all its forms. But of course no love story would ever be complete without a bucketful of melancholy, which runs in tandem with love throughout the book. Really though the scope is wider than either of these two emotions and is more a celebration of life in all its complexity and absurdities. The sheer scope of the work is immense and coupled with the intricacies and the exploration of the psychology of the characters makes this a real masterwork.

The Caribbean setting really gives the book a sense of intoxication and is a fantastic backdrop which also mirrors the changes of Florentino and Fermina throughout their lives. This really is a book to take your time with, a slow burning work of immense passion and coupled with 100 Years of Solitude, it’s no surprise to see why Márquez won the Nobel prize for Literature.

    1. I heard that too, completely gutted, will have to go and buy even more of his books now to get my fix. Although I tend not to rush them once I own them, like Dickens or Orwell, I will hate it when I can’t read any of their work for the first time. I love that experience.

    1. Thanks, I always love a good compliment, Márquez is a class act, I look forward to reading more of his work, I got The Autumn of the Patriarch for my birthday so I am looking forward to that. It’s always nice to meet a fellow literature fan.

  2. After reading this…and knowing that The Autumn of the Patriarch is your current read makes me so happy for you to have your Márquez fix! I, by your good and magical recommendation, am so loving this book….the more I read…I more I need to read…lost in Marquez’s prose and of course his intoxicating wordsmithing which is pure bliss to be enrapt in….despite life’s demands that I leave this wondrous world he has exquisitely crafted for mundane things.

I thank you again…more than I can say for what is sure to become…nay…already is my all time favorite book! I am ever so anticipatious to not only savor this to the end…but to acquire 100 Years of Solitude as well….like you…I shall space them out so their delights can be spread out and appreciated to their fullest extent of literary decadence. xxxx

    1. Your new favourite book, even better than Pride and Prejudice, high praise indeed! I am pleased that you love it, even though I knew yo would, for you have impeccable taste in all things.

Márquez’s magical ability with language is sublime but all credit to the translator too, for keeping it so rich and magical. xxxx

  3. Javier Bardem is one of the stars of the movie in “Love in the Time of Cholera,” and I found it an excellent reason not only to read Marquez, but an excellent reason to see more of Bardem’s acting!

    1. I must admit to having never seen the film, although I am looking to enhance my overall awesomeness by watching more films, I will also try not to judge it against the book. A mighty challenge in itself.

  4. This is one of my all time favourite books. It is odd, I look around sometimes and I can envision some of the things that Marquez has described, and his descriptions of the river over the fifty years and the way it changes, from nice and calm with wildlife to putrid and dead sums up the world as it is today in a book about yesterday. The way someone would wait their whole life if necessary for the one he loved, and sex scenes for 70 year olds – incredible and ingenious storytelling.

    1. I like to think that the river mirrored his progression in life, with regards to how pure and lively it was at the beginning. The old people sex scenes were indeed something and then some lol…in some library the corner of those pages are probably folded down!

      1. Haha they probably are. I wanted to check on the pages because the books I found on Amazon were just “Leaf Storm”

So what you are saying is that at the beginning, he was pure and clean and by the end he was filthy and well worn 😉

        1. I noticed that in the bookshop the other day that they are doing Leaf Storm on its own which is a shame as the other stories are so much fun, I would definitely urge you to try and pick the book with the other stories in as well.

He was a dirty bugger after all those women he was with haha.
